The surface velocity is from the so-called "cube81" simulation carried out by the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2; http://ecco2.org) project. The scientific visualization was done by Chris Henze (NASA/Ames). Streaklines indicate the direction of the surface velocity. The intensity of the streaklines is proportional to surface speed. The relatively slow moving small-scale eddy circulation is due internal ocean instabilities while the fast moving large scale waves are forced by atmospheric winds.
